China's CATL unveils sodium-ion battery - a first for a major car battery maker

CATL presents first commercial sodium-ion batteries to be produced on industrial scale, an industry first, without external (customer) financed research.

The batteries will have better performance, energy density 160 Wh/kg 1st gen, then 200 Wh/kg 2nd gen, fast chargeability, cold climate suitability (90% at -20C), very economical (no rare materials), without production facility implications, without car design implications, and much less environmental impact (much less mining; about 130 tons Lithium-ore per car is no longer needed), compared to Li-ion batteries (Tesla 3 at 160 Wh/kg)

Europe missed out on this chance due to ignorance years ago, cancelling these programs prematurely. Back then, the expected density peak was estimated at 100-110 Wh/kg
